Welcome to ROOTS, a program supported by The Dewey School offering a variety of programming outside our regular Dewey days such as our Wee-Ones Walks, Naturally Rooted in Art and Nature summer camp, and professional development.
Our "Wee-Ones Walks" are an opportunity for caregivers and their wee-ones, ages birth through age 3 to explore the extensive grounds of the Canterbury Shaker Village while experiencing both learning and social experiences in nature.
"Wee-Ones Walks" are led by Jayne Hastings, an experienced Early Childhood Educator with a Masters Degree in Curriculum Design and Arts Integration. She spent the last 5 years as a director and lead teacher of a local nature-based preschool. She currently offers Curriculum Consultation for Traditional and Nature-based Preschool Programs to help expose children and their caretakers to the value of learning through nature, music, storytelling, movement and art. She is an artist and musician who uses creative songs and chants to help the youngest learners make strong connections to all they see, hear, and feel on their journeys through beautiful natural spaces.· Jayne is passionate about everything and anything associated with the youngest learners and their families and is excited to be part of the Dewey Team!
Each walk will be spent outdoors in the forests, fields, orchards, or at a pond, and may include a seasonally appropriate outdoor story time. There will be no explicit topic for each walk, rather we will take advantage of the seasons, weather, and our discoveries to guide our learning. The walks will take a deliberately slow pace to accommodate little ones, though parents should be prepared (wraps, carriers) to carry young children for part of the program, if necessary.
"Wee-Ones Walks" are scheduled twice a month on Tuesdays from 9:30-11:00. Adults are $15.00 per guided walk. Wee-ones are FREE. All weather offers opportunities for a variety of observations and experiences. Space is limited!
We can't wait to get outside with you and your wee-one!
